Stonesfield, Oxfordshire

The brief

Our architect customers Rosie and Andy found Cherrywood Bespoke searching for a handcrafted kitchen company in Oxfordshire

They had purchased a lovely quintessential cottage in Stonesfield that required extensive renovation work.  With Andy’s professional architectural knowledge, they decided to take on the project in stages, starting on one side of the cottage.

The kitchen had a beautiful inglenook fireplace perfected positioned for a range cooker and they ideally wanted to enhance the space with an Everhot range oven.  The room size of the kitchen, typical of stone cottages with Oxfordshire, needed a thoughtful design to incorporate the details they were looking for. Rosie and Andy wanted to maximise storage to include a drinks cabinet designed to fit different bottle sizes. They had a vision for a breakfast bar seating two in the middle of the room and a traditional Belfast sink with a boiler tap.

The Vision

To suit their cottage Andy and Rosie opted for Shaker style cabinetry with a cock beaded frame and quarter round door moulding. They chose to use Mylands London based paint company in traditional deep colours to complement the stonework selecting Brompton Grove and Clirkenwell with bronze Armac Martin handles and a Granite House stone Stratra White in 30mm depth which bounced the light around beautifully within the cosy cottage feel of the kitchen space.

We designed an extra deep work surface in front of a window that was built over an old window seat at the front of the house. This created a very pretty window aspect with light streaming throughout the whole kitchen area, again reflecting on the light shade of Quartz they selected. Either side of this deep work surface we handcrafted and installed tall cabinets to house drinks and useful extra storage shelves.

We love working with unique older homes that require a sensitive and mature approach to the kitchen design. For example, the cottage had a spiral staircase on one side of the kitchen, that required us to design and install a studwork false wall in situ to build wall cabinets against.  Feature thick curved walls also required a clever approach for the worktop in quirky coves and deep reveals for decorative items.
