At Cherrywood Bespoke, we’re undeniably in love with shaker style cabinetry design – and the deeper meaning behind the creation of this style of furniture.
Shaker kitchen designs originated from the Shaker movement (a break out group of the Quakers) from the late 18th to early 20th century. They harnessed a deep seated belief in keeping things utilitarian and consciously purposeful but admirably beautiful at the same time. Function as a forerunner to form, that beauty resides in usefulness. It pre-dates the Arts and Craft movement but sits alongside this ethos of handcrafted items made from natural materials as a kick back against the Industrial Revolution. It was truly a return to high skill hand-craftsmanship – an ethos we totally endorse.
The Shaker craftsmen made all their beloved items and focused on taking their time and doing things ‘properly’ and with incredible skill and technique to craft gorgeous designs out of wood.
What Does A Shaker Kitchen Door Look Like:
Shaker style cabinets are simply represented by a flat panel door with neat square frames and minimal fuss; they are purposefully durable. The size of the outer frame can vary and this simple adjustment changes the look of the kitchen entirely. For example a wide frame creates a solid ‘Farmhouse’ style looking kitchen, whereas a narrow frame creates a contemporary look to complement a leaner, minimalist design scheme. Often a bead is added to the sides of the frame to older property styles.
In true Shaker homes you would see useful and delightful handcrafted items like wooden peg rails, solid shelves, rocking chairs, simple stools and mushroom shaped wooden knobs as handles. A very humble and honest approach to design.
We offer three Shaker cabinet styles handmade with the same conscious highly skilled craftsmanship we believe in. We can mix freestanding pieces with fitted cabinetry, so you can create a kitchen that feels just right – you can choose between classic Shaker or contemporary Shaker, or a little of both.
