“Timeless design isn’t about following trends, but about creating something that feels right for now, and for years to come.”
What is a Shaker Kitchen – and why do we love it?
The ‘Shaker’ name comes from the original Shaker movement and their honest talented craftsmen who focused on handcrafting beautiful furniture out of natural materials. These are the roots of the Shaker Kitchen Style. The Shaker craftsmen were inspired to make beautiful lasting items that made sense from a makers point of view – and the end users point of view. They focused on utility and form of the furniture with beauty arising from the simplicity and humbleness of the designs.
“Don’t make something unless it is both necessary and useful; but if it is both necessary and useful, don’t hesitate to make it beautiful.” — Shaker Philosophy
In a busy world with so much choice, this concept is a wonderful way to focus on what really matters, only make necessary and useful things – and ensure they are beautiful. The sentiment behind the Shaker kitchen design makes it a true meaningful classic – as such this design remains as timeless and on trend as ever. ‘Classic’ never goes out of date.
Why does the Shaker Kitchen remain so popular?
- From a craftsman and designers point of view – it simply makes sense to design a kitchen door with a strong outer frame which is what the Shaker door looks like. They feel amazing to use – solid and robust so they last a long time. We offer a 15 year guarantee on all our cabinetry but we are confident our Shaker designs would last much longer.
- The design captures a timeless look that can be elegant or contemporary. The outer frame of the cabinet door can be adjusted in multiple ways to capture different looks from period to modern.
- In a true Shaker kitchen the outer frames are made out of wood – natural materials will always be more desirable than manmade over the longer term
- Investing in something that’s classic and lasts is better for the planet
- Shaker kitchen designs tend to be high end products because they are mostly made out of wood and often by luxury kitchen companies so they remain a desirable item with a high perceived value.
All kitchen companies make variations on the Shaker style door to bring it in line with their own design packages. With Cherrywood Bespoke – as a bespoke handmade kitchen company, we can tailor the design entirely to suit the property and the style intention of the space.
Colour choices also make a huge difference to the feel of a space, and all these decisions are taken care of by our interior designer, Stephanie. She specialises in both Period Property styling and Scandinavian Property styling which bridges more modern linear concepts for kitchen spaces.
